Naxos Transfers Summer 2026 - Naxos Island Guide

A local guide to the island

What to do
in Naxos.

Four things worth doing on the island - chosen for the visitors who want more than a sun lounger. Written by the people who drive these roads every day.

From the island

Most people arrive at Naxos knowing only the coast. They stay near the beach, eat at the waterfront, and leave without going inland. That is their loss - and this guide is designed to fix it.

What follows is not a list of everything on the island. It is four places worth the effort, written plainly, with practical notes on how to get there. We run private transfers across Naxos - these are the destinations we take people to, again and again.

Inland - Half Day

Halki & Apiranthos - the marble villages

Tragaea plateau - 16-28 km from Naxos Town

Twenty minutes inland from the coast and everything changes. The Tragaea plateau is covered in ancient olive groves, and in the middle of it are two villages that have barely changed in three centuries. Halki is the smaller one - Venetian tower houses, a century-old distillery making Kitron from citron leaves, and a handful of ceramics studios where the person behind the counter made the piece you are looking at that same morning.

Apiranthos sits higher up at 600 metres. Its streets, walls, and doorsteps are paved entirely in white marble quarried from the mountain the village sits on. The main square has a kafeneion where old men play tavli and nobody is looking at their phone. This is the point of coming.

"The Vallindras distillery in Halki has been making Kitron from the same copper stills since 1896. Entry is free. Taste the green, white, and yellow variety. Buy the one you liked."

West Coast - Half or Full Day

Plaka Beach - three kilometres of white sand

~14 km from Naxos Town - ~20 min

Plaka is the beach Naxos locals recommend when they trust you enough to give away their favourite. Not the most fashionable, not the closest. Just three kilometres of fine white sand, water so clear you can read through it, and a handful of tavernas that have been here long enough to know what they are doing. The beach faces west - the afternoon light is extraordinary, and the sunsets are worth staying for.

"A day car rental in high season costs โ‚ฌ40-60, plus fuel and parking - which at Plaka in July means a long walk in the heat. A Vito for four people is โ‚ฌ64 each way. The maths is closer than most people expect."

Swim in clear, shallow water Lunch at a beach taverna Walk the full beach to the quiet south end Stay for the west-facing sunset

Guided Tour - Half Day - 8:30 AM

The Ancient Naxos Tour - the Olive Road

Eggares - Iria - Melanes - Halki - Sagri

The island's mythological spine runs through the agricultural plain west of the mountains. The tour starts at the oldest olive press on Naxos - now a working museum with 15 oil tastings - then visits the sanctuary where Dionysus was said to have been born, active as a place of worship since the 14th century BC. In a shaded garden a 2,700-year-old marble giant lies exactly where the quarrymen left him when his foot broke during transport. The road winds back through one of the oldest churches in Europe before returning through Halki.

Naxos Town - A Morning or Evening

Chora - the town most people walk past

Port - Kastro - Portara - Old Market

Most visitors move through Naxos Town as transit - arriving at the port, glancing at the Portara, heading to their accommodation. The town rewards those who stop. The Kastro, the Venetian fortified town within the town, is a warren of marble lanes and tower houses built by the de Sanudo dynasty in the 13th century. Inside the walls there are three museums, a Capuchin convent, and a Catholic cathedral - all within ten minutes' walk of each other, all free or nearly free to enter.

Moving around
without a car.
