The Short Answer

Athens to Naxos โ€” at a glance

Best route Ferry from Piraeus โ€” daily year-round, 3.5โ€“5.5 hrs depending on vessel
Fastest option Seajets high-speed from Piraeus โ€” 3 hrs 20 min
Cheapest option Blue Star conventional ferry โ€” from โ‚ฌ43โ€“60 economy
Flying option Olympic Air ATHโ†’JNX โ€” 45 min, 2โ€“3 daily flights, from ~โ‚ฌ60
Airport โ†’ Piraeus port Metro Line 3 direct โ€” 60 min, โ‚ฌ9
When you arrive Pre-book a private transfer from JNX โ€” from โ‚ฌ20 to Naxos Town

Almost every American who visits Naxos flies into Athens first. The question of how to get from Athens to Naxos is therefore the question that shapes the beginning and end of every trip โ€” and it gets more complicated than it first appears. There are three Athens ports, two ferry types, a domestic flight option, and a handful of things that catch first-time visitors off guard. This guide covers all of it, in the order you'll need it.

Overview

Your two options โ€” ferry vs flight

There are two ways to get from Athens to Naxos: ferry or domestic flight. For most travellers, the ferry is the right choice โ€” it's cheaper, more frequent, carries your full luggage without restriction, and arrives directly in Naxos Town where everything is. The flight is faster but adds airport-to-airport time on both ends and costs more overall once you factor in transfers.

OptionJourney timeCost (economy)FrequencyBest for
Blue Star ferry (Piraeus) Most popular5โ€“5.5 hrsโ‚ฌ43โ€“603ร— dailyFamilies, luggage, value, reliability
Seajets high-speed (Piraeus)3 hrs 20 minโ‚ฌ67โ€“953ร— dailySpeed priority, smaller groups
High-speed ferry (Rafina)4โ€“4.5 hrsโ‚ฌ60โ€“801โ€“2ร— dailyStaying near ATH airport night before
Olympic Air flight (ATHโ†’JNX)45 min flight
+ ~2 hrs airport time each end
โ‚ฌ60โ€“1402โ€“3ร— dailyMinimal luggage, tight schedule, summer

The honest time comparison: A Seajets high-speed ferry takes 3 hrs 20 min on the water โ€” but add 60 min to get from the airport to Piraeus, arrive 1 hour before departure, and you're looking at 5.5 hours door-to-port. The flight is 45 minutes in the air, but with check-in, the ATH domestic terminal, and a transfer from JNX โ€” the total time difference is smaller than it looks on paper. For most trips, the ferry wins on cost, comfort, and luggage freedom.

Step 1 โ€” Getting to the Port

Getting to Piraeus port from Athens airport

Piraeus is the main ferry port serving Athens โ€” a large complex about 12km southwest of the city centre and 40km from Athens International Airport (ATH/Eleftherios Venizelos). From the airport, you have three options:

Metro Line 3 (Blue Line) โ€” recommended for most

The direct metro from Athens Airport to Piraeus runs on Line 3 (Blue Line) with no transfer required. Journey time is approximately 60 minutes. Trains run every 30 minutes from around 6:30am to 11:30pm. A one-way ticket costs โ‚ฌ9 โ€” tap your credit card or phone directly at the turnstile (Tap2Ride system), or buy at the ticket machine. The metro drops you at Piraeus station, directly opposite Gate E5/E6 โ€” the gates serving Cycladic island ferries including Naxos.

Limitation: Carriages are not designed for large suitcases. Fine with a carry-on and one bag; awkward with two large checked bags and a family.

Bus X96 โ€” cheapest, slowest

The X96 express bus runs 24/7 directly from Athens Airport to Piraeus port, stopping near Gate E6. Buses run every 20โ€“30 minutes. Journey time is 90 minutes in normal traffic, up to 2 hours in rush hour. Ticket costs โ‚ฌ5.50, bought at the kiosk between Exits 4 and 5 at Arrivals or on board.

Best for: early morning or late night departures when the metro isn't running. Not recommended if your ferry departure is tight โ€” traffic is unpredictable.

Taxi or private transfer โ€” most convenient for groups

A taxi from ATH to Piraeus takes 40โ€“70 minutes depending on traffic and costs around โ‚ฌ55โ€“70 (day rate). At night (midnightโ€“5am) the surcharge applies and fares are higher. Yellow metered taxis queue outside Exit 3 at Arrivals. Pre-booking a private transfer is more reliable โ€” the driver meets you at arrivals and knows your gate. For 3+ people the taxi cost per head becomes comparable to the metro.

Allow enough time. Piraeus port is large โ€” the gates for Cycladic ferries (E6, E7, E8) are a reasonable walk from the metro exit. Arrive at least 1 hour before departure for a foot passenger on an e-ticket. If you're taking a vehicle, arrive 90 minutes early. In July and August, add 30 minutes to all estimates.

Alternative Port

The Rafina alternative โ€” is it worth it?

Rafina is Athens's second ferry port, on the east coast of Attica โ€” about 20 minutes from the airport by taxi (around โ‚ฌ45) compared to the 60-minute metro to Piraeus. Some travellers use it specifically because of this proximity.

For Naxos, the Rafina route is served by Seajets with a crossing time of around 4 hours 15 minutes and tickets from about โ‚ฌ60. There are fewer daily departures than from Piraeus โ€” typically 1โ€“2 per day depending on season.

Our verdict on Rafina: Worth it if you're staying near the airport the night before departure and want to avoid the commute to Piraeus in the morning. Not worth reorganising your trip around otherwise โ€” the Piraeus connections are more frequent, better served, and easier to book. For most visitors flying in from the US and heading straight to a ferry, Piraeus on the metro is the simpler call.

Choosing Your Ferry

Which ferry to take โ€” high-speed vs conventional

Blue Star Ferries โ€” conventional, the workhorse of the route

Blue Star operates large conventional ferries on the Piraeusโ€“Naxos route 3 times daily. Crossing time is around 5 to 5.5 hours. These are the right choice for most travellers: large, stable in rough weather, with proper seating, an outdoor deck, cafeteria, and space for luggage and vehicles.

Ticket classes on Blue Star: Deck/Economy (access to lounge and deck, no assigned seat โ€” arrive early to claim one in busy season); Airline Seat (numbered seat, recommended); Business/Class A (separate lounge, wider seats, table service, significantly more peaceful โ€” worth the extra โ‚ฌ20โ€“30 for the upgrade). Cabins are available for the overnight crossing.

Seajets โ€” high-speed, faster but different

Seajets operates high-speed vessels (the Worldchampion Jet being the fastest) with a crossing time of 3 hours 20 minutes to 4 hours from Piraeus. All seats are numbered airplane-style. The interior has no outdoor deck. The vessels are smaller and noticeably more affected by sea conditions โ€” in strong Meltemi winds (Julyโ€“August) high-speed ferries can be cancelled or rough. Economy tickets run โ‚ฌ67โ€“95, VIP/Platinum class โ‚ฌ105โ€“140.

Which to choose? If you have a family or significant luggage, Blue Star Business class is the better crossing experience โ€” more space, more stable, better facilities, and a deck to stand on. If you're travelling light and time matters, Seajets is the better call. In summer, both get busy โ€” book seats, not just deck tickets.

Booking Tickets

Booking your ferry tickets

Unlike flights, Greek ferry prices don't fluctuate much based on how far in advance you book โ€” the price is broadly the same whether you book 3 months or 3 days ahead. What does run out is availability, particularly in July and August.

  • Where to book Ferryhopper.com and Ferryscanner.com are the most reliable comparison sites for the route. They show all operators, times, and classes in one place. Direct booking via bluestarferries.com or seajets.gr also works.
  • How far ahead Shoulder season (Aprโ€“Jun, Sepโ€“Oct): 1โ€“2 weeks ahead is fine. Peak season (Julโ€“Aug): book 3โ€“4 weeks ahead minimum, especially for Business class and cabins. Automated seats and Business class sell out first.
  • E-tickets Most companies now issue QR code e-tickets. No printing required โ€” show your phone at the gate. Download the PDF to your phone before you travel in case of poor signal at the port.
  • Your gate at Piraeus Your gate number will be on your ticket. For Naxos ferries it's usually E6, E7, or E8. Look for your gate before leaving the metro โ€” it's printed on the large departure boards at the port entrance.
  • Travelling with a vehicle Book vehicle transport separately when purchasing your ticket. Arrive 90 minutes before departure. The vehicle deck fills up from the back โ€” follow the port staff instructions. Car prices range from โ‚ฌ32โ€“120 depending on season and vehicle size.
  • Cancellation Most operators allow free cancellation up to 24โ€“48 hours before departure. Check the specific policy when booking. Strikes (particularly May 1st) can cancel all ferries โ€” avoid booking crossings on that day.
At Piraeus

At Piraeus port โ€” what to expect

Piraeus is a working port, not a tourist terminal. It's large, sometimes chaotic in high season, and the signage โ€” while better than it used to be โ€” can feel confusing when you're there for the first time with luggage.

  • Know your gate Gates for Cycladic islands are E6โ€“E10. Your specific gate is on your ticket. The metro drops you between E5 and E6 โ€” most Naxos ferries are an easy walk from there. Confirm your gate on the electronic departure boards at the port entrance before committing to a direction.
  • Boarding Scan your QR code at the gate โ€” no separate check-in for foot passengers. Board as directed by port staff. On Blue Star conventional ferries, there's no assigned boarding order for economy class โ€” stake your seat early.
  • Food at the port There are cafes and fast food options within the port area. Not remarkable. The ferries have their own cafeteria and coffee bar on board โ€” adequate for a 5-hour crossing.
  • Left luggage There is no left luggage facility at Piraeus port. If you need to store bags before a late departure, use a left luggage service in central Athens (several operate near Syntagma and the airport).
  • Overnight option If your ferry departs very early (some Blue Star sailings leave at 7:30am), staying the night before at a hotel near Piraeus port is worth considering. The port area has several adequate hotels within 5 minutes' walk of Gate E6.
The Crossing

On the ferry โ€” what it's actually like

The crossing from Piraeus to Naxos on a conventional Blue Star ferry takes about 5.5 hours and passes through some genuinely beautiful Aegean scenery โ€” the Saronic Gulf, then the open Cycladic sea, with Syros, Paros, and eventually Naxos appearing on the horizon.

On Blue Star ferries: there is an outdoor deck, indoor seating areas, a cafeteria serving hot food and coffee, a small shop, and on most vessels Wi-Fi (usually paid, patchy). Business class has its own lounge with waiter service โ€” a meaningful upgrade for a 5-hour crossing. Bring a book, download content before you go, and claim a good seat or outdoor spot early.

On Seajets high-speed ferries: all indoor, airplane-style numbered seats, one coffee shop. No outdoor deck. The vessel moves faster and the ride is noticeably more dynamic in any significant swell. Fine in calm conditions; less comfortable when the Meltemi is blowing. The crossing is shorter so the lack of facilities matters less.

Motion sickness: The Aegean can be rough, particularly in summer under the Meltemi wind. If you're susceptible, conventional ferries are more stable than high-speed vessels. Take medication before boarding โ€” once you're out of Piraeus harbour, there's no pharmacy on the water.

The Alternative

The direct flight option from Athens

Olympic Air (part of Aegean Airlines) operates direct flights between Athens International Airport (ATH) and Naxos Airport (JNX). The flight itself is 45 minutes. Flights operate 2โ€“3 times daily in summer, less frequently in shoulder season, and may not operate in winter at all.

  • Route ATH (Athens International) โ†’ JNX (Naxos Island National Airport). Operated by Olympic Air. Book at olympicair.com or aegeanair.com.
  • Duration 45 minutes in the air. Allow 90 minutes at ATH before departure (domestic check-in). Total door-to-port time is typically 3โ€“3.5 hours including transfer from JNX to your accommodation.
  • Price โ‚ฌ60โ€“140 one way depending on season and how far ahead you book. Baggage fees apply for checked luggage above the allowance โ€” factor these in when comparing to ferry prices.
  • Luggage Weight limits apply strictly on small aircraft. If you're travelling with multiple large suitcases, the ferry is simpler โ€” no luggage restrictions for foot passengers.
  • Cancellation risk JNX is a small airport โ€” flights are more susceptible to cancellation in strong winds than ferries. In summer Meltemi conditions, some JNX flights are delayed or cancelled. Check the weather before travelling. Ferries are more robust in this regard.
  • Best case for flying Travelling light, short trip where every hour matters, or island-hopping from Naxos to another island with an airport (Mykonos, Santorini). For standard holidays with normal luggage, the ferry is usually better value.

Arriving in Naxos โ€” what happens next

Arriving by ferry โ€” Naxos port

The ferry arrives at Naxos Town (Chora) port โ€” directly in the centre of the island's main town. The Portara is visible on its islet to the left as you come in. Disembarkation takes 10โ€“20 minutes on a conventional ferry. The port area has taxis, a small bus stop, and several accommodation options within walking distance.

Blue Star / Seajets 3.5โ€“5.5 hrs ยท from โ‚ฌ43

Hotel Your accommodation

If your hotel is in Chora itself, you can walk. If you're staying at Prokopios, Plaka, or anywhere more than a kilometre from the port, you need transport. In peak summer, taxis at the port are scarce โ€” multiple ferries arrive and the taxi queue fills immediately. Pre-booking a transfer is the only reliable way to guarantee a vehicle is waiting for you, regardless of what time your ferry docks.

Arriving by plane โ€” Naxos Airport (JNX)

JNX is a small single-terminal airport 3.5km southwest of Chora. There is a taxi rank in the arrivals area, but the fleet is small โ€” on summer evenings when multiple flights land in sequence, taxis run out quickly. There is no bus service from JNX to Chora. Pre-booking a private transfer is the straightforward solution: your driver is waiting at the arrivals exit with your name, and the price is fixed before you travel.

We cover every destination on the island from JNX โ€” Naxos Town, all beach areas, and inland villages. Jeep Renegade for couples and solo travellers, Mercedes Vito for families and groups up to 8, Mercedes Sprinter for larger groups up to 12. We track your flight and adjust automatically for any delays. See all prices and destinations.

A note on the taxi situation at Naxos: The island has around 30 taxis for a population that swells to tens of thousands in summer. Pre-booking is not a luxury โ€” it's the difference between a transfer waiting for you and standing at the port or airport for 40 minutes while taxis serve other bookings.

Step 3 โ€” Arrive Without the Stress

Your ferry or flight is sorted.
We'll handle the last stretch.

Private transfer from Naxos port or JNX airport to your hotel โ€” fixed price, agreed before you travel. Meet & greet, flight tracking, all luggage included. Available 24/7, all year round. Jeep for couples, Vito for families, Sprinter for groups.
