What the 2026 Upgrades Mean for Your Next Trip
The Naxos Airport (JNX) Expansion Project is officially in full swing. It’s about a โฌ23 million investment for the primary “airside”, plus a โฌ10 million investment for the “landside” experience to handle the increased passenger flow. Here is everything you need to know about the construction timeline and how it will make your journey to Naxos smoother than ever.
Whatโs New
The primary goal of the project is to transform Naxos from a small regional landing strip into an airport capable of handling larger loads and, eventually, international travelers.
The Runway: We are adding 300 meters to the southern end of the runway, bringing the total length to approximately 1,200 meters.
- Capability: Once completed in the 2026 window, the airport will safely handle ATR-72 aircraft at full capacity and potentially regional jets.
More Parking: The aircraft apron (parking area) is expanding by 6,000 mยฒ, meaning more planes can be on the ground at once, reducing those pesky “holding patterns” in the air.
Passenger Comfort: While the runway is the focus, the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority is also upgrading the terminal with better seating, shaded outdoor waiting areas, and modernized restrooms.

Timeline: When will it be finished?
Construction is active throughout 2025 and is slated for completion in time for the 2026 summer season.
Traveler Tip: In early 2025, the airport scheduled brief closures (such as in March) to connect new taxiways to the runway. While we don’t expect major closures during the peak summer months, always check your flight status 48 hours in advance if you are traveling during the shoulder seasons of 2025 and 2026.
Why This Matters for You
You might be wondering, “Why do I care about 300 meters of extra asphalt?” Here is how it actually changes your vacation:
1. Fewer “Weight Restricted” Flights
Currently, aircraft like the ATR-72 (common on Olympic and Sky Express routes) often cannot fly to Naxos with a full load of passengers and luggage because the runway is too short for a heavy takeoff. By 2026, these planes will fly at full capacity. This means fewer instances of luggage being delayed and more available seats during the busy July and August weeks.
2. Potential for Direct International Flights
Once the expansion is certified, Naxos will have the infrastructure to support direct international charters. Imagine skipping the layover in Athens and flying straight from London, Paris, or Berlin to the Cyclades.
3. More Flight Options to Better Prices
With a larger apron and longer runway, more airlines can compete for slots. Increased competition usually leads to better flight schedules and more competitive pricing for travelers.

Getting from the New Runway to Your Hotel or Villa
While the airport is getting bigger, the islandโs narrow, winding roads remain the same! With the expected increase in passenger volume in 2026, the airport arrival hall will be busier than ever.
To avoid the scramble for the limited taxi queue, we recommend booking your transfer in advance. At Naxos Transfers, we are already updating our fleet and scheduling to align with the new 2026 flight capacities, ensuring that as soon as you step off that new runway, your air-conditioned ride is waiting.
